Whilst trying to figure out a way to avoid the chilly British winter I had the crazy idea of attempting to drive from Cambridge to Africa in a banger.
I have always loved the idea of a banger rally and after watching endless repeats of Top Gear challenges on Dave I finally tapped out the email to dakarchallenge.co.uk confirming that Team Shoegarden would be sending a team to Africa in 2012.
Team Shoegarden (Will and Olly with remote support from Nick and Natali) is going to drive from Cambridge to Bamako, Mali via Morocco, Western Sahara, and Mauritania in aid of Garden Africa.
Garden Africa is a small but highly effective charity that helps people in central Africa with agricultural projects and essential horticultural education. They have been featured on BBC Radio 4 and the people that run the charity are friendly and well motivated.

OUR WHEELS: We are using some of Japans finest AWD technology...from 1994. Our Subaru Impreza was kindly donated by Valentine Richardson who sadly passed away earlier this year. She was a huge petrol head and keen car fan, competing in rallies and hill climbs all over the world. The spirit of adventure is within the car.
Team Shoegarden will be taking over our Shoegarden Twitter Feed and Facebook page in January as we attempt to keep you up sto date with news.
I really hope you can follow our journey and help donate to a great cause.
Many Thanks,
Will Lane
